Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh — A city steeped in history and spirituality, Varanasi is now embracing technology to preserve its vast repository of ancient manuscripts. The Uttar Pradesh Public Library Department, along with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and other government bodies, has launched a robust digitization initiative to safeguard priceless literary treasures against the passage of time.

This ambitious project focuses on preserving manuscripts in languages such as Sanskrit, Persian, Hindi, Arabic, and Sharda, many of which date back centuries. These manuscripts hold critical insights into ancient philosophy, science, medicine, and literature, offering invaluable knowledge for researchers and historians. According to official reports, over 10,000 manuscripts have already been digitized under this initiative.

At the heart of this endeavor is the Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Library, the central library of BHU, which has been designated as a Manuscript Conservation Centre under the National Mission for Manuscripts. Established in 1917, this library holds one of the largest collections of rare texts in India, with thousands of manuscripts that are now being systematically digitized and cataloged.

The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated significant resources for this project, backed by funding from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The total project budget stands at approximately ₹50 crores, ensuring the use of advanced scanning technologies and storage systems for high-resolution digital backups. Once digitized, the manuscripts will be made accessible through online portals, creating a global platform for knowledge sharing.

“This is a groundbreaking initiative for preserving our cultural heritage while making it accessible to the world,” said an official from the Uttar Pradesh Public Library Department. “These manuscripts represent the intellectual wealth of India, and this project ensures their legacy continues for generations to come.”

The project also includes outreach programs to educate the public about the importance of manuscript conservation. Students, scholars, and local communities are being encouraged to participate in workshops and seminars that highlight the relevance of ancient texts in modern times.
